Power Requirements

See page 45 of the above spec. The power requirements are:

  • +12-19 volts
  • The plug is a 5.5 mm/OD and 2.5 mm/ID.

These are ballpark readings needed to estimate supply power requirements. Loads readings were taken from a current meter on a bench power supply. Load changes continuously as Linux processing requirements change. Consider the follow on the low end with peaks at lease 25% higher. All measurements are of low accuracy because the change quickly and readings were eyeballed.

The following were taken with a keyboard, mouse, wireless, wired, and HTMI monitor active.

Activity Impact (amps)
Power Requirements at 18 volts
Boot to desktop 1.0+ intermittently
Steady state in desktop 0.34 to 0.43+
Active use of USB webcam added 0.15
Inactive motor controller added 0.04
Camshift rotate demo driving wheels (no load) 0.57 to 0.66 +

This test is designed to determine the impact of supply voltage on current requirements.

Supply voltage Current (amps) Watts
Power Requirement as a function of voltage
18 0.55 + 9.9
15 0.65 + 9.8
12 0.85 + 10.2

The steady state power requirements are roughly 10 to 13 watts a independent of supply voltage. A supply that delivers 2A and 18V should provide the required headroom for intermitent spikes.
